Around the World Kitchen is not our (Meagan & Bill’s) story but God’s story unfolded over many many years through us. Meagan and Bill intersected in ministry each with a part of that story. Meagan’s work with refugees/immigrants/other internationals along with her short term missions brought to life within her the real vision, understanding and experience of what’s it’s really like to be in and moved into another culture so quickly. Along the way she also learned the power of welcoming. Bill was on a slower path of experiencing these things, along that path he too learned about the act of welcoming and how it begins long before you actually meet the person, and is in the preparations. He saw that in his time preparing a apartment for a Cambodian refugee family when he was about Meagan’s age. With hearts already prepared by God, when the idea of a refugee/international cookbook came up it just seemed to fall into place through the hearts, gifts, skills and experience God had already equipped in them.
Now they work together multiculturally to bring alive the words of Scripture that say, "Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God." (Romans 15:7) Both Bill and Meagan are avid dreamers and wonderers and love a good challenge - especially if it involves delicious food!
The cookbook paves out a two-way street to connect inter-culturally. As Americans, we can reach out and invite other cultures into our homes and make them a meal using a recipe from their home country. Immigrants and refugees can also make any number of classic American recipes we have included. This cookbook has many never before written down recipes and a staple of American favorites.
Immigration has never been a bigger issue globally than it is today. After WWII up to 13 million refugees were created, vs today over 25 million! Countless numbers of refugees have been forced out of their home countries. Many nations, including our own, have been paralyzed by politics and the enormity of the crisis and have failed to find an answer. If we are waiting for the political process to solve this crisis, we may be out of hope.
But there is great hope at a grass roots level. We can work together to unite the various cultures of the world. How? Simple — through our stomach. We have found that the common love of food is a great way to break down our cultural barriers. When we share a meal with those from another country, we gain a greater understanding and love for one another. Deep down, we all have the desire for relationship.
Our hearts desire and vision, is to help welcome and connect cultures by food, and to bring about a better understanding of each other. So we welcome you to get a cookbook, cook and invite! Make new friends!
